The Clinical Analysis on 17 Cases of Dementia

Abstract
|
|
|
A clinical analysis was carried out for 17 patients who was treated in Dept. of Neuropsychiatry of Taejon Oriental Medicine Hospital from 23 Dec. 1996 to 31 Oct. 1997 and was ruled out as dememtia.
The results were summarized as follows.
1. The frequency of dementia have no difference between male and female, in the distribution of sex, the number of seventies was 8 cases(47.1%) as top, and that of having history of drinking and smoking was each 5 cases(29.4%) and 4 cases(23.5%).
2. In the distribution of seasons, the ratio of spring and winter was each 41.2%(7 cases), 35.3%(6 cases), that of summer and fall was comparatively low.
3. In the period from onset to admission, the period within a week had 8 cases(47.1%) as top, and the most period of treatment was 2 week(35.5%).
4. The number of cases that had preceding disease was 10 cases(58.8%), a major portion of preceding disease were stroke, hypertension, diabetes mellitus.
5. The most common symptom was memory disturbance, especially all of cases had short-term memory disturbance, and 8 cases(47.1%) had the symptom of disorientation.
6. The CT scan films of 8 cases(47.1%) showed cerebral infarction and brain atrophy, and that of another 5 cases(29.5%) showed only brain atrophy, that of another 4 cases(23.4%) showed only cerebral infarction.
7. In the MMSE-K, the score of 5 cases(29.5%) lie in from 11 point to 15 point and the number of cases in that examination was inpossible was 5 cases(29.5%).
8. A number of cases was diagnosed as mixed type dementia, 8 cases(47.1%) in the ischemic score, 14 cases(45.1%) in the vascular score.
9. The most used recipes were a sort of recipes that tonify the vital energy and the blood, or to replenish vital essence and resuscitate(21 cases, 37.5%), especially ANSINCHUNGNOITANG (安神淸腦湯) was the most used recipe.
In the aromathrapy, stimulators was used as much as 18 cases(43.3%).
10. In the judgement of efficacy, 3 cases(17.6%) showed excellent efficacy, 4 cases(23.5%) showed good efficacy, 9 cases(52.9%) showed no change, and I case(5.8%) showed aggravation.
